EXPLAINED: Peptides and the body

More on Peptides and what they do to the body...

Peptides are a big beauty industry buzz word that is thrown around a lot with few people knowing exactly what they are. Most know they are something good, something that really helps in skincare, make-up and hair care products, but what exactly are they? Trying to find out about these terms can take one down a path that requires a science degree.

Well, we’ve tried to make peptides as simple as possible – so much so that this should feel like a children’s subject – easy peasy.

Let's break it down:

To put it in very very simple terms, Peptides are smaller versions of proteins that are found and used by the body. They are naturally occurring and found in ALL living things. They are the building blocks of certain proteins needed by different parts of the body. For example, collagen and elastin peptides make the skin firmer and younger looking. There are then copper peptides that can help your body make collagen and elastin. Another type is creatine peptides, they improve strength and help to build muscle mass and are mainly stored in your skeletal muscle. Defensins peptides are mostly active in the immune system and are thought to be antimicrobial and promote wound healing. They are widely distributed throughout the body.

There are hundreds of peptides that exist within our bodies, all performing different functions. Some travel through the blood to all of the cells of the body, some are absorbed in the small intestine and some are found in your bones.

Peptides are found in many skincare, hair care and makeup preparations. They give us a helping hand by either by promoting skin firmness, increasing hair strength, etc.
